Mind over matter? by Sue Blackmore

Many philosophers and scientists have argued that free will is an illusion. Unlike all of them, Benjamin Libet found a way to test it.

Ben Libet, author of the most famous experiment ever done on consciousness, has died at the age of 91.

Not long before his death he wrote me a letter about my book Conversations on Consciousness. Polite and kind though his words were, his real reason for writing was, I think, to ask why he wasn't one of the interviewees. I was stung into replying immediately to tell him how much I wished he had been. The truth was that I had no resources for writing the book: I just interviewed the people I met at conferences or when giving lectures, or those near to home. Sadly, our paths never crossed while I was writing the book and there was no way I could travel to UC San Francisco especially to talk him, much as I would have loved to.

So I must be content with my happy memories of the one time we did meet, back in 1991. After a conference in Berkeley he invited me for lunch in a little Chinese restaurant and then we walked around Golden Gate Park, talking nineteen to the dozen about consciousness, mind, life, free will and the meaning of death.

And of course we talked about his famous experiment. He had, in fact, carried out lots of experiments on consciousness since the early 1970s. First there was a series of studies of the timing of neural events, showing that when you directly stimulate the brain with tiny pulses of electricity it requires about half a second of continuous stimulation of the sensory cortex for a conscious sensation to be felt.

Note the way I have worded this. It is not true to say that you need half a second of stimulation and then the sensation is felt; that would mean our experience of the world would be delayed by half a second and we'd all be dead. Instead, he proposed (and provided plenty of evidence for) the idea that sensations are subjectively antedated to the time of the initial brain effect, but are only consciously experienced if half a second of activity follows. This is the origin of what is often called "Libet's half-second delay".

This may be weird enough, but it is for his experiment on free will that he will mostly be remembered. In this experiment he wanted to find the cause of our spontaneous, deliberate actions. Certainly we feel as though we consciously decide to act and then do so. Yet philosophers and scientists for hundreds of years have argued that the brain does not need a magical conscious self to start actions off, and free will must be an illusion. Unlike all the thousands of people who have argued around this point, Libet actually found a way to test it.

He asked subjects in the laboratory to hold out their arm and, whenever they felt like it and of their own free will, to flex their wrist. He then measured three things - the time at which the movement began, the time at which the "readiness potential" in the brain began (signalling the brain starting to organise the coming movement) and then, most tricky of all, the time at which the subject made the decision to move.

This really is tricky because there is, by definition, no physical activity in the brain or anywhere else that corresponds to this. He was trying to measure something purely mental - the free decision, or thought, of wanting to act. Finding a way to do this is probably why the experiment became so famous. What he did was this. He had a spot revolving on a screen, like a clock face, and he asked the subjects to call out where the spot was at the exact moment that they decided to act. In other words, they were, after the fact, making a judgement about where the spot was at the time, and that could be used to accurately time the decision to act.

And his results? They were quite consistent and have since been repeated many times. The brain activity comes first, then the decision to act, and then finally the action itself. Not only does the decision to act happen after the brain is already getting ready to set off the action, but it comes nearly half a second later. It looks as though our conscious decision to act cannot, however strongly it feels that way, be the cause of our actions.

Oh dear! Free will seems to be disproved. But it's not that simple. Libet himself did further experiments that seemed to show that we may not be able to start actions consciously, but we can veto them once they have begun - saving at least some role for free will. But even that does not end the issue. Literally hundreds of academic articles, and several whole books, have been written about this experiment and how to interpret it. This is why I say it is the most famous experiment on consciousness ever done.

In a way the whole furore is bizarre. Most scientists claim to be materialists. That is, they don't believe that mind is separate from body, and firmly reject Cartesian dualism. This means they should not be in the least surprised by the results. Of course the brain must start the action off, of course the conscious feeling of having made it happen must be illusory. Yet the results created uproar. I can only think that their materialism is only skin deep, and that even avowed materialists still can't quite accept the consequences of being a biological machine.

Libet, unlike so many others, was wonderfully open about this. He really did believe that mind can affect body, that consciousness is some kind of power of the "non-physical subjective mind" or "conscious mental field", and even that we might consciously survive death. Indeed, this was what inspired his experiments in the first place.

What I so much enjoyed and admired, on that walk all those years ago, was his willingness to bring his science right into his everyday life, and his life into his science. As we walked along the street he explained how important free will was to him, that without it our lives would be meaningless and there would be no point in being good, because we would have no true freedom to choose between good and evil. He pointed towards a little girl up ahead of us on the pavement. His results, he said, showed that we cannot be held responsible for thinking of murdering, raping or stealing from people because initiating such actions begins in the unconscious brain, but we can and must be held responsible for stopping ourselves from doing those things. In this way his own results made moral sense.

I disagree fundamentally with him. I think, and thought then, that free will is entirely illusory. So our discussion was lively and exciting and full of the most wonderful mixture of science, philosophy and the anguish of everyday life. I would have loved to have interviewed him for Conversations on Consciousness. One of the themes I tried to bring out in those interviews was how consciousness researchers fit their work into their ordinary lives, and he was one of those rare scientists whose life and work were completely intertwined.

Sadly, I don't believe he ever read my letter, telling him how very much I would have liked to meet him again. A few days later I received an email from his daughter, Moreen, telling me that he had died peacefully on July 23, aware but weak, and with his family around him. She said "Your comments on his relating life to his work also crystallises something typical of him which was good to see described the way you did. I think that he experienced death in that way also. He was very curious about what that experience might reveal about the mind and brain issue. Perhaps he knows now."

Tax the homeopaths

Revenues from alternative therapies might free up NHS doctors to offer what really does work for patients - time and care.

What are we going to do about the scam of homeopathy? As Richard Dawkins proclaimed, in the second of his "Enemies of Reason" series, all the evidence shows that homeopathic remedies are nothing but water and, as you'd expect of a drink of water, the only effect they have is a placebo. But it was much less fun to see Dawkins tackling this topic than it was to see him take on astrology, spirit guidance and crystal balls the previous week. The reason, I think, is not just that serious health issues are involved, but that the millions of people who buy homoeopathic remedies really do feel better for them. It might help to tell people how crazy it is to believe in newspaper astrologers or crystals, but it won't help telling them that homeopathy doesn't really do what it claims, or that it's entirely based on a discredited 18th century system, when they actually do get better.

Dawkins revealed three reasons why they get better. First, alternative therapists often spend an hour with their patients, getting to know them, discussing their problems, and generally taking an interest in their lives and troubles; by contrast NHS GPs can only spend on average eight minutes with each patient. Second, alternative therapists often touch, stroke and caress their patients, with the explanation that they are aligning the chakras, releasing the energies, or feeling the blockages. Their explanations are false but touch itself can have a wonderfully soothing and relaxing effect that promotes healing. GPs, bound by having to tell the truth and by rules of propriety, cannot use such lies and cannot stroke and soothe their patients even if they wish to.

Third, there is the whopping great placebo effect, induced by the way remedies are marketed, and by the power of the therapist to convince patients of the effects. Here is the worst problem for real doctors. Effective medicine has always depended on placebo effects and self-healing, but using the placebo effect means effectively lying, and modern medicine has no place for systematic lying. Quite rightly, GPs are trained to tell the truth about a medicine's effectiveness, explaining the likely outcomes, the side effects, and the plusses and minuses. For many self-limiting or stress-induced illnesses the best treatment may easily be a chalk pill along with a convincing statement that it will work wonders given by someone you trust - but GPs cannot use this wonder non-drug. Alternative therapists don't have to do tell the truth.

They can tell whatever lies they like about hidden lines of force, invisible energies, and healing colours, and so they have appropriated the powers of the placebo effect to themselves.

But Dawkins missed a trick here. Money. Placebo effects increase not only with the convincingness of the explanation and the perceived power of the therapist, but with their cost. It's cognitive dissonance. If you get something for free you value it less than if you have to pay a lot for it. In a country with a national health service, with most treatments free, doctors can't use that effect either, but the alternative therapists do. People who buy their own treatments are likely to find they get better quicker than those who get them for free.

So what to do? TV programmes exposing the fraud will have little effect, and we can't ban people from selling little bottles of water. We can do our best to prevent homeopathy being given on the NHS, but there are many convinced believers who will fight hard to keep it.

So here's a thought. How about putting a heavy tax on homoeopathic remedies? With the millions sold each year even a few pounds a bottle would raise plenty of funds. The placebo effect would be strengthened, and the money raised could be used to provide what really matters - time that the doctor can spend with her patients.

I'm sure this is not a magic pill either, but we have to do something to bring back the power of time, kindness, and the placebo effect into real medicine instead of leaving it to the alternatives.

We of little faith by Sue Blackmore


Religious belief is inconsistent with reason and corrosive to the human mind - and I don't want to live in a world where it is respected.

"Religious faith is not inconsistent with reason."

I nearly choked on my breakfast when I heard this on the Today programme. These words were spoken by Mr Blair, in his inimitably sincere style. He was addressing an Islamic conference in London, on June 4, and pledging more money to support Islamic studies in British Universities.

When I'd calmed down I went to check, and it really is true. In the full text of his speech, on the No 10 website, he says:

"In the face of so much high profile accorded to religious extremism, to schism, and to confrontation, it is important to show that religious faith is not inconsistent with reason, or progress, or the celebration of diversity."

But religious faith is inconsistent with reason (and much more that we value as well).

I'm not referring to the ordinary kind of faith by which we have faith in another person's honesty, or that taking an aspirin will reduce our headache. I am talking about religious faith, as Tony Blair was too. In this context faith means believing without reason. Indeed, this is precisely how it is defined, for example as "Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence" or in Merriam Webster as "firm belief in something for which there is no proof". Does this make faith inconsistent with reason? I would say yes. Reason demands that you look for evidence and believe accordingly - which is exactly what we do when we trust a friend because they've been reliable in the past, or doubt a rumour until we've checked on the facts.

Faith is corrosive to the human mind. If someone genuinely believes that it is right to believe things without reason or evidence then they are open to every kind of dogma, whim, coercion, or dangerous infectious idea that's around. If someone is convinced that it is acceptable to base their beliefs on what is written in an ancient book, or what some teacher tells them they must believe, then they will have no true freedom of thought; they will be trapped by their faith into inconsistency and untruths because they are unable to throw out false ideas when evidence against them comes along.

The whole point of a university education is to learn to think for yourself, to criticise theories, to compare ideas and to find out the truth by research, exploration and experiment. Whether you are studying French, chemistry, or psychology, you are given tools for thinking independently and ways of evaluating other people's claims. In this there is no room for faith, and should be no room for faith.

I want to be clear about some things I am not saying. First I am not saying that everything has to be rational. There is much about human life that has little or nothing to do with rationality; there's love and affection, art and poetry, happiness, beauty and intuition. But none of these things has to be taken on faith. University courses include much that is not rational, not just in arts courses but even in science, where one has hunches or enjoys beautiful ideas, but again there is no room for holding onto religious faith - wherever the ideas come from they must ultimately be thrown out if they are shown to be wrong.

Second, I am not saying that no students should have religious beliefs. This is (and must be, in a free society) a matter for them, in the privacy of their own minds. There will always be some students who believe things on faith and others who don't, but the job of a university course is to make people think and to give them the tools for doing so. Faith is not one of those tools. Indeed, by and large, a university education reduces religious belief, as indeed it should.

I have had countless students on my psychology courses who began as believers in God, or the afterlife, or spirits and souls, and then had to question those beliefs through the process of learning how the mind actually works. I have seen them (and I hope helped them) go through this painful process of throwing off their restrictive childhood religious beliefs and learning to live with the uncertainties and open-mindedness needed for real learning.

Finally, I am not saying there should be no courses on Christianity or Islam or any other religion. There are and should be, for there is much of importance to study: the history of the religions, the beliefs, their cultural background and much more. But universities should be teaching people how to think, question, and understand these things, not to have faith in "truths" proclaimed without reason or evidence.

Tony Blair pronounces the word "faith" with just that touch of special reverence in his voice, as though it were something to respect, something we should admire in others and grant them licence to believe whatever they want on its account. Indeed he proclaimed that the conference was "an opportunity to listen; to hear Islam's true voice; to welcome and appreciate them; and in doing so, to join up with all those who believe in a world where religious faith is respected". How despicable. How creepy. How frightening when we see the dire consequences of faith-based actions all around us.

Of course people of faith want us to respect their beliefs. For they have no other way of defending them than to appeal to respect, to promise rewards for believers, or threaten punishments for unbelievers. So anyone who cares about the truth should resist these meme tricks. Religious faith is something that we should struggle to throw off when we have better ways of learning the truth about the universe we live in; something we should overcome rather than something we should respect.

I, for one, do not want to live in a world where religious faith is respected. I do not want more "faith-based initiatives". I do not want more faith schools, and our great universities should continue to teach people to think for themselves, to respect the truth, and to take nothing on faith.
